Infertility is becoming an increasingly prominent issue globally, driven by lifestyle changes, genetic factors, and other influences. Recent data highlights that between 60 to 80 million people worldwide experience infertility, with India accounting for approximately 15 to 20 million affected individuals. In Telangana, the problem is particularly acute, impacting about 15% of the population. Alarmingly, male infertility rates in the state have escalated to between 20% and 30%.
In response to these challenges, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has emerged as a pivotal solution for many couples struggling to conceive naturally. To commemorate World IVF Day, Kamineni Fertility hosted a special event at their King Koti facility on Thursday from 11 AM to 3 PM. The event saw participation from medical professionals, staff, and numerous families who had previously benefited from IVF treatments. The day was marked by various cultural activities and celebrations.
Dr. V. Hemalatha Reddy, a specialist at Kamineni Fertility, addressed the growing concern of infertility in Telangana, noting a decline in the state’s fertility rate. While the average ideal fertility rate is 2.1 children per woman, the current rate stands at only 1.8. Dr. Reddy emphasized that many men tend to overlook their role in infertility issues, often attributing the problem to their partners. Issues such as low sperm count and poor sperm motility are prevalent among men, while women face complications like PCOS, hormonal imbalances, obesity, high testosterone levels, fibroids, low ovarian reserve, and adenomyosis, which can lead to heavy bleeding and miscarriages. She also pointed out the persistent societal stigma surrounding fertility treatments that still needs to be addressed. Kamineni Fertility has successfully performed over 11,000 IVF treatments to date.
Dr. Sarika Mudarapu, another expert from Kamineni Fertility, highlighted advancements in reproductive technology. The success rate of IVF has significantly improved from 20% in the past to 50% currently, thanks to innovations such as fertility-sparing surgeries, Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), Endometrial Receptivity Assay (ERA), DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI), and Artificial Intelligence in embryo selection. Additionally, the advent of cryopreservation has facilitated the effective storage of eggs, sperm, and embryos, allowing individuals to consider parenthood later in life. Dr. Mudarapu observed a notable increase in inquiries about egg freezing, with 50 to 100 queries daily, a sharp rise from previous years. This trend is more pronounced in urban areas, while rural couples are increasingly seeking fertility treatments.
